xmms-mbc is an xmms plugin that does multi-band sound compression, in a way similar to AM radios. By doing compression on different frequencies separately, it achieves a better result than the average voluem normalizer plugin. Internal computation are done at a 32 bit accuracy for better-sounding results.
How do I build xmms-mbc ?
First you should get the source code from CVS :
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@xmms-mbc.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/xmms-mbc login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@xmms-mbc.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/xmms-mbc co -P mbc
grab the xmms source from http://www.xmms.org
put the mbc directory as a subdir of xmms-X.Y.Z/Effects/
cd to Effects/mbc and type "make"
copy .libs/libmbc.so to /usr/lib/xmms/Effect/libmbc.so
run xmms, the plugin should appear among the effect plugins
the maximal compression intensity can be controled in the configuration menu
